NTI
A dental NTI (Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition) device is a small, custom-made dental appliance designed to prevent teeth grinding (bruxism) and clenching. It works by inhibiting the trigeminal nerve's nociceptive pathways, reducing muscle activity associated with bruxism and clenching. This device is primarily used to alleviate migraines and tension headaches caused by excessive jaw muscle activity.

When a Dental NTI Device is Needed
- Chronic Migraines: For individuals suffering from chronic migraines that are believed to be triggered or exacerbated by teeth grinding or jaw clenching.
- Tension Headaches: Those experiencing frequent tension headaches due to excessive jaw muscle activity.
- Bruxism: Patients who grind their teeth at night, leading to tooth wear, fractures, and other dental issues.
- Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD/TMJ): Individuals with TMD/TMJ symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking, and muscle soreness that can be alleviated by reducing muscle activity.
- Preventive Measure: To prevent dental damage from bruxism and clenching, especially in individuals at high risk of these behaviors.
Types of Clear Retainers by Material
Acrylic NTI Devices
Made from a durable acrylic material, these devices are custom-fitted to the patient’s teeth. They cover only the front teeth, preventing contact between the posterior teeth and reducing muscle activity.- Durability: Highly durable and can withstand significant wear.
- Effective Muscle Inhibition: Effectively reduces muscle activity, helping to alleviate headaches and prevent dental damage.
- Custom Fit: Tailored to the patient's dental anatomy, ensuring a precise fit.
- Comfort: May be less comfortable initially compared to softer materials.
- Cost: Typically more expensive due to the custom fabrication process.
Thermoplastic NTI Devices
Made from a thermoplastic material that can be molded to fit the patient’s teeth. These devices offer a balance between durability and comfort.- Comfort: The thermoplastic material provides a more comfortable fit compared to rigid acrylic.
- Adaptability: Can be easily adjusted and remolded if necessary.
- Effective Muscle Inhibition: Reduces muscle activity and alleviates headaches and bruxism symptoms.
- Durability: May not be as durable as acrylic devices and might need to be replaced more frequently.
- Cost: Can be moderately expensive, though usually less so than acrylic devices.
Silicone NTI Devices
Constructed from a flexible silicone material, these devices are designed for maximum comfort and adaptability.- Comfort: Highly comfortable due to the flexible nature of silicone, making them easy to wear.
- Gentle on Teeth: Less likely to cause discomfort or irritation to the gums and teeth.
- Effective for Sensitive Patients: Ideal for patients with sensitive teeth or gums.
- Durability: Less durable than acrylic and thermoplastic devices, may wear out more quickly.
- Effectiveness: Might not be as effective for severe bruxism cases due to the softer material.
Our recommendation
Dental NTI devices are crafted to prevent teeth grinding and clenching, primarily aiming to relieve migraines, tension headaches, and TMD/TMJ symptoms. These devices are advised for individuals suffering from chronic migraines, tension headaches, bruxism, and jaw disorders. NTI devices come in a variety of materials, including acrylic, thermoplastic, and silicone, each providing distinct benefits and drawbacks in terms of comfort, durability, and effectiveness. Choosing the right NTI device depends on the severity of the condition and the patient's specific needs, ensuring effective relief and prevention of dental damage.
